Exciting Update! Midjourney has officially launched the initial alpha version of their highly-anticipated V6! 🥳

Midjourney V.6 introduces upgraded visual coherence, language comprehension, photorealism, and text writing. While not all planned features are available yet, core image generation sees sizable improvements in this first iteration.

There are striking enhancements to aesthetic quality, textures, lighting, and detail. New prompting guidelines also emerge — cleaner, more specific prompts work best. V6 proves extremely sensitive to the words used.

This big leap forward has been over 9 months in the making and unlocks new creative possibilities for users.

To turn it on select V6 from the dropdown menu under /settings or type --v 6 after your prompt

This model can generate much more realistic imagery than anything they’ve released before with:

• Much more accurate prompt following as well as longer prompts
• Improved coherence, and model knowledge
• Improved image prompting and remix
• Minor text drawing ability
• Upscalers improved

Text Generation 📝

Finally, text generation is here! 🥳 Sometimes, the spelling may be slightly off, but it’s already much improved from the previous version.

📌Tip: To ensure more accurate text generation, the team suggest placing your text in “quotations” and --style raw or lower --stylizevalues may help.

Upscalers improved 🔍

Next, there are now two new upscalers with ‘Subtle’ and ‘Creative’ modes (2x resolution increase). You’ll see buttons for these under your images after clicking U1/U2/U3/U4).

If you look closer, you can see the difference in the details, such as makeup, texture, decorations of the attire and more.

Style and Prompting for V6 💫

Prompting with V6 is significantly different than V5. You will need to ‘relearn’ how to prompt.

• V6 is much more sensitive to your prompt. Avoid ‘junk’ like “award-winning, photorealistic, 4k, 8k”
• Be explicit about what you want. It may be less vibey but if you are explicit it’s now much better at understanding you.

Photographic

If you want something more photographic / less opinionated / more literal you should probably default to using --style raw

Jellyfish

Christmas Puppies

With the latest Midjourney V6, we can make some cool pictures, almost like real life. But making these pictures might need a different way of prompting to help.

Stylize

Lower values of --stylize (default 100) may have better prompt understanding while higher values (up to 1000) may have better aesthetics

V6 vs V5.2

To compare the new version of Midjourney V5.2 (left) and V6 (right), I put them to the test using the same prompts.

Realism vs. Creativity

In my opinion, the V6 style tends to prioritize realism and detailed imagery, making it more suitable for photorealistic images.

V5.2 style is better in creating creative graphics and illustrations with a stronger emphasis on aesthetics.

📌 More to Note

• This is an Alpha Test. Changes will occur regularly and unpredictably.
• It will significantly change as Midjourney takes V6 to full release.
• Version 6 is slower / more expensive compared to Version 5 but it will get faster as it is optimized.

Enhancements in speed, image quality, coherence, prompt adherence, and text accuracy are anticipated in the coming weeks.

V6 is the third model the team has developed from the ground up on their AI superclusters, with a development period of 9 months.

It’s not the final iteration, but they aim for it to embody a significant progression that is deeply intertwined with the creative potential of our collective imagination.
