How to Use Midjourney Vary Region Feature for “Inpainting”
Remove unwanted objects, change characters, and fill in missing parts!
Exciting Update! The wait is over. Midjourney’s highly anticipated “Inpainting” feature has finally arrived!
They are calling it “Vary (Region)”. As the name suggests, you can make variations in selected regions of an image including removing unwanted objects or filling in the missing parts.
Today, let me share with you creative usage and techniques to fully utilize the potential of the new “Vary Region ” feature with custom prompts!
Follow this quick start and prompts if you are new to Midjourney:
Let’s start with some basic usages.
What is “Vary (Region) — Inpainting”
The “Vary (Region)” option allows you to select and regenerate specific parts of an image. This allows users to remove unwanted objects or fill in missing parts which works similarly as inpainting.
📌 Note that this tool requires you to use up-to-date Discord client versions, if you do not see the Vary Region button, try updating your Discord client.
How to Use the “Vary (Region)” feature
1. Generate an image
Generate your image as usual with the “/imagine” command
2. Upscale the Image
Use the U buttons to upscale your selected image.
3. Select “Vary (Region)”
Click on the 🖌️ Vary (Region) button to access the editing interface.
4. Pick Regions for Regeneration
Utilize the freehand or rectangular selection tools located at the lower left of the Editor.
The size of your selection will impact the results.
- Bigger selections provide greater space to craft new creative details.
- Smaller selections yield smaller and subtler modifications
📌 Note: Existing selections can’t be edited, but undo button (top right) allows multiple steps reversal.
5. Submit & View Your Results
Click the Submit → button to send your request to Midjourney Bot. You can now close the editor and you will be given a new image grid
Vary Region + Prompt Remix
You can also combine the Midjourney “Vary Region Editor” with “Prompt Remix” to regenerate selected segments using a revised prompt.
How to Use Remix Mode with Vary (Region)
You can also make customization with the prompt.
1. Turn On Remix Mode
To do so, you will need to turn on “Remix Mode” in the setting with the “/settings” command.
2. Generate, upscale and Select “Vary (Region)”
Repeat the same steps as above. Create an image and upscale your selected image and click the 🖌️ Vary (Region) button to open the editing interface.
3. Select Areas to Regenerate
Similarly, select the areas you would like to make changes.
4. Modify Your Prompt
This time, you can see an extra textbox below the image.
When you’re ready, edit the prompt to describe desired changes in the chosen area. Focus on the details you wish to alter or add.
📌 Prompting Strategy: Shorter-focused prompts are more effective:
Prompts should focus on what you want to happen in the selected area. Instead of “Please transform Spiderman's head to red color,” opt for direct prompts like “Spiderman, red color.”
Here we go! A Spiderman with only his head changing into red color.
📌 Note: You can usethe Editor Button under an upscaled image repeatedly to test various selections and prompts.
🌟 Vary Region + Remix Prompting Tricks
1. Selection: The size of your chosen area shapes the result.
Larger selections give the Midjourney Bot more room to generate new creative details. Smaller selections will result in smaller, more subtle changes.

2. Prompting Strategies
For optimal results, altering the prompt should align better with the image: such as ( adding a hat to a character ), as opposed to introducing something wildly incongruous, like ( a dolphin in a forest ).
Shorter-focused prompts are more effective as well.

1. Adding Character in Graphic Novels
It is great for adding characters or objects when crafting graphic novels. Take this as an example:

2. Switching Products and Props in Mockups
Remember that I have talked about prompts for creating professional and stunning mockups. Sometimes, you may want to replicate the mockup background with a different product.
The new“vary” feature is just the right tool to use. Simply select the products and you can replace them with a new product by updating your prompt.

You can even change the face of a character. This will be great for creating game avatars with the same clothing or switching gears.
