Why ergonomics matter to designers

--

Where’s Human in Human-Centered Design

When you feel comfort even though you’ve never used that product before

Since I’m majoring in Design Technology, I was in ‘Engineering Phychology’ class in my first semeter of sophomore. There’s a lot of students giving up this class at the first day because of the tons of notion and essays ahead. For me, this is the beginning to attend every Ergonomics class in my department. I’m still use these papers for my design study even I graduate a year ago. In these days, it is common to use Human-Centred Design, User-Centred Design, User Experience Design, etc. However, whenever I talk about Ergonomics, designers said it’s something new.

What is Ergonomics?

The scientific study of people and their working conditions, especially done in order to improve effectiveness

Human from an ergonomic point of view

  • Information processing system
  • Who are adapted to a new technology society
  • Important and creative but unexpected, emotional, and low reliable system
Human as information processing system

From the chair you are sitting in to every corner of the interface of your smartphone you see every day, there is no place that ergonomics does not reach. I analyze humans quantitatively and qualitatively through ergonomics, and look at the perspective of innovators who want to develop almost everything that humans use for the better.
