Based on Twitter data from 2013 to 2020 [1]:

#AllLivesMatter came into fruition as a counter-protest to #BlackLivesMatter

But what if we repurposed the phrase to learn about the different social movements affecting our society?

Introduction

Fall 2022 was the semester in which I worked on my capstone for my Master’s in Professional Studies in UX Design at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). I aimed to explore, how we as a society learn about the different social issues that affect us, and how we hold these discussions among our peers. It’s hard to invoke change if we’re only shouting over each other, and it’s hard to invoke change if we don’t do the work to understand one another.

For my capstone, I took on the complicated topic of exploring what it would look like to learn about social movements from a place of understanding versus a place of reaction. Is it possible for us to change our dialogue regarding social issues as a whole in order to foster understanding and create meaningful change in our society?

Project Type — Capstone project for M.P.S. in UX Design

Background

As many of us are aware, throughout history, we’ve seen the rise and fall of social movements. As of today, you may be most familiar with Black Lives Matter, Me Too, LGBTQ+ movements, and many more.

It is also worth noting that not all movements are progressive or align with views that much of the world would agree with, such as Neo-Nazi movements or movements with misogynistic, religious intolerance, or racist principles.
