UX Design Principles and Striking the Balance with the Real World

As I continue to share my UI/UX journey with you, I recently stumbled upon a noteworthy insight during one of the classes I attended over the weekend: There exists a discrepancy between the ideal and real world, and what truly matters is how designers leverage that gap. It’s a lesson I believe we can learn from the world of architecture, where the translation of concepts into reality often diverges significantly. Hence, I am determined not to fall into the same pitfall in UX Design and am eager to roll up my sleeves and start bridging this gap.

Although I’ve been absorbing a wealth of knowledge lately, I’ve only managed to apply it in a few examples. What struck me is that I don’t pay enough attention to the principles behind these examples. Often, I intuitively or subconsciously apply them. However, I’m hesitant about letting my past experiences influence my design process too much. Therefore, I’d like to share a few principles that I find compelling to solidify them.

Balance and Hierarchy: The Bridge Between the Ideal and Real World

One of the principles that particularly resonated with me is the concept of Balance and Hierarchy. I noticed how, without even realizing it, my consciousness aligns with these principles when comparing websites like Amazon and Hepsiburada. This highlights the vital role principles play in enhancing the user experience. Balance and Hierarchy are the ones that captured my attention the most. In architecture school, we often create models in the early stages of a project, cutting and shaping to achieve a sense of harmony among elements. We explore various paths to achieve balance among masses, as symmetry, while tempting, isn’t always the best approach. I believe that striving for proportion and harmony, rather than mere symmetry, can result in a clearer and more comprehensible expression.

Typography: A Powerful Tool in Visual Design

Another eye-opener for me has been the significance of typography. Initially, I didn’t place much emphasis on it. However, during a class discussion, a friend’s comment about the choice of a font for the Jaguar brand left me astounded. According to them, the font choice alluded to the car’s low-to-the-ground and swift nature. This revelation made me realize the profound impact even seemingly minor design elements can have. Undoubtedly, while contemplating various design principles, dedicating time to typography is essential.

Shaping the User Experience through Principles

In conclusion, continuous learning and growth are inevitable in the field of UX Design. Understanding and applying principles play a pivotal role in the success of any design project. Thus, minimizing the gap between the ideal and real world should be a primary objective for designers aiming to enhance the user experience. Remember, the power of design lies in the details, and it’s these details that shape the user’s experience. By correctly applying principles, you can make your design projects more effective and impactful.
