Understanding user retention
What is retention, how to measure and when to measure?
Under the Hood
The complete story begins a few weeks back when we people behind iHateReading was discussing and planning the retention for our product. The main idea is to retain and maintain the users landing on our platform. The first and very common problem we are confronting is Retention.
But we are not sure what is the exact meaning of retention, since we knew nothing about retention we can’t even think of ways around it or a solution to crack this problem.
The story takes a bit of turn then back, we at iHateReading then decide that we will research and learn and share a bit of knowledge about product management and its peculiar terms.
So, as decided we start our journey by taking baby steps and the very first step we choose is to solve the case studies from the scratch. Everything is getting a bit planned and organised as we have to pick one case study per week and straight away we will get to the solution researching abreastly.
This was the way around to get ourselves more into this new domain called Product Management. If you have known me I define myself as a Developer * Designer * Journalist and we too run a lot of projects on daily basis, so the managing product becomes a vital skill for us to grow.
Problem statement
We pick one case study which we will definitely share once we solve it on our website as well as our Youtube channel. But before we even start getting our hands into the solution of our first case study, we get stuck with the most basic question, which is, What is Retention?
So, our first problem statement is, What is Retention?
We decide to dedicate each of use some time to research and read about retention. In the final discussion, we will wrap up each other thoughts and understandings and make ourselves on the same platform about retention.
This approach is quite powerful as we are giving each other some time to learn and then share our thoughts with the other person. Also, in this way, by spending a little bit of time we are gaining the knowledge of your correspondent or colleague too.
