The Story of Bad Designer Club

As I reflect on my journey in design, I can’t help but marvel at the transformative power of mentorship and community. Design isn’t just a job for me — it’s something I love that’s shaped who I am and what I want to achieve. And while textbooks provided a foundation, it was the guidance of incredible mentors that propelled me beyond the realm of conventionality and into a world of limitless possibilities.
During my undergraduate years, my ideas were often dismissed as “crazy” by some, but my mentors saw potential where others saw chaos. Their unwavering support empowered me to turn my unconventional concepts into tangible creations, laying the groundwork for the designer I am today. It’s a testament to the profound impact mentorship can have on one’s creative journey.
It wasn’t until my time at CSUEB that I fully grasped the significance of community in design. The notion of sharing ideas, collaborating with like-minded individuals, and engaging in spirited discussions ignited a newfound passion within me. It was from this spark that the Bad Designer Club was born — a platform where we challenge the stigma surrounding “bad design” and champion the belief that every design, no matter its imperfections, harbors the potential for growth and innovation.
As the co-founder of Bad Designer Club, I’ve dedicated myself to fostering a supportive environment where experimentation is celebrated, and diverse perspectives are embraced. My personal role within the club extends beyond mere leadership; it’s about nurturing a culture of inclusivity and empowerment, where every member feels valued and inspired to push the boundaries of their creativity.
But my commitment to the design community doesn’t end there. I firmly believe in the importance of giving back and paying forward the knowledge and opportunities I’ve been fortunate to receive. That’s why I’ve made it my mission to identify gaps in traditional course structures and provide resources to fill them. From organizing workshops and seminars to facilitating guest lectures by industry professionals, I’ve sought to equip aspiring designers with the tools and insights they need to thrive in an ever-evolving landscape.
Through it all, I’ve learned that true growth stems from collaboration, curiosity, and a willingness to embrace failure as a stepping stone toward success. As I continue on my journey, I remain committed to advocating for inclusivity, fostering creativity, and empowering the next generation of designers to dream boldly and design fearlessly.
After all, the future of design is not just in our hands — it’s in our hearts and minds, waiting to be shaped by those who dare to imagine the impossible.
