Minimalism as a design philosophy has been around for various decades. It recently gained popularity because it offers a clear and concise visual hierarchy without the clutter which you might find with many other design trends.

What is Minimalism?

Minimalism is a UI design trend that emphasizes simplicity, clarity, and a focus on essential elements. By removing unnecessary components and distractions, minimalist design aims to create an intuitive and efficient user experience. This design philosophy is rooted in the belief that less is more, and a streamlined interface can lead to better user engagement, satisfaction, and overall performance.

The minimalism UI design trend has its roots in the broader minimalist movement in art, architecture, and design, which emerged in the mid-20th century. That said, the minimalism trend we see today is an amalgamation of various influences:

  • Bauhaus Movement (1919–1933)
  • De Stijl Movement (1917–1931)
  • Scandinavian Design Movement (1950s — Present)
  • Swiss Design Movement (1940s — 1960s)
  • Japanese Aesthetic — Wabi-Sabi (16th centuries — Present)

With the rise of digital technology and increasing screen time, the need for clear, simple, and efficient user interfaces has become more critical. As a result, minimalism has emerged as a popular design trend in UI design, emphasizing simplicity, functionality, and a focus on the essential elements of the user experience.

Key Characteristics:

  • Focus on functionality
  • Clear visual hierarchy
  • Intuitive navigation
  • Use of whitespace
  • Clear typography
  • Limited/Simple color palette
  • Clear user feedback
