Clayton Christensen was a prominent American scholar, business consultant, and professor who was known for his groundbreaking work in the field of disruptive innovation. He was born on April 6, 1952, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and sadly passed away on January 23, 2020.

I had the big pleasure to be mentored by Professor Christensen and his “disruptive strategy” and I really want to express his big impact in my career.

Here is a brief biography of Professor Clayton Christensen:

Early Life and Education:

  • Clayton Christensen grew up in a Mormon family in Salt Lake City. He served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South Korea for two years.
  • He earned his Bachelor of Arts with Highest Honors in Economics from Brigham Young University in 1975.
  • Christensen went on to attend the Harvard Business School, where he received his MBA with High Distinction in 1977.
  • He furthered his education with a Master of Philosophy in Applied Economics from Oxford University in 1979, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.
  • In 1992, he obtained his Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) from Harvard Business School.

Academic Career:

  • Clayton Christensen began his academic career at Harvard Business School, where he became a professor and served on the faculty for many years.
  • He specialized in the fields of innovation, technology, and business management.
  • Christensen’s most influential work came in the mid-1990s when he introduced the concept of “disruptive innovation” in his book “The Innovator’s Dilemma” (1997). This theory revolutionized the way businesses and industries thought about innovation and competition.
