Diving Deep into the Commonsense Abilities of ChatGPT and How It Impacts the Future of AI

PlaygroundAI v1 | ChatGPT Jr.

Meet ChatGPT, the AI Whiz Kid with a Lot to Learn

ChatGPT, a large language model based on the GPT-4 architecture, has shown immense potential in natural language processing tasks, like question-answering and text generation. However, how well does it understand and reason about commonsense knowledge? In this viral blog, we break down a recent study that investigates ChatGPT’s commonsense abilities and discuss its implications for the future of AI.

The ChatGPT Report Card: Impressive, but with Room to Grow

The study reveals that while ChatGPT achieves good accuracy in commonsense question-answering, it struggles with specific types of knowledge, especially social and temporal commonsense. It is knowledgeable in generating most of the commonsense knowledge using prompts, but it fumbles when identifying the underlying commonsense knowledge for a given question, often generating knowledge with a high noise rate. While it can achieve impressive accuracy in commonsense question-answering tasks, it still has its limitations, especially when it comes to social and temporal commonsense knowledge.

The paper answers several key questions on the commonsense abilities of LLMs.

As large language models like ChatGPT continue to improve, we need to recognize their potential and acknowledge the areas that need further development to enhance their commonsense reasoning capabilities.

  • Despite its impressive performance, ChatGPT still struggles to identify the underlying commonsense knowledge required to answer certain questions accurately.
  • Researchers have found that ChatGPT’s performance varies across different types of commonsense knowledge, with the model excelling in some areas and faltering in others.
  • GPT models have a challenging time reasoning about abstract concepts, social norms, and events that involve the passage of time.
