Quick Midjourney Update: 5 key highlights to know (17th August 2023)
Keeping up with the rapid changes and developments

Here’s a quick rundown of the most recent Midjourney Weekly Office Hours:
(1) Midjourney V5.3
- This week could see the release of in-painting. (Update: It’s released on 22nd August 2023 — but the version stays the same as V5.2)
- If new aesthetics are included, the latest version will be called V5.3.
Otherwise, it’ll be referred to as V5.2 with in-painting. - Developers are still split on whether an aesthetics update is an improvement (see below).
(2) Midjourney V6
- V6 has been delayed to allow for more ambitious experiments.
- In 1–2 weeks, the developer will decide whether to release smaller conservative update(s) or wait for a bigger V6 that focuses on improving prompt understanding.
(3) Ongoing and future projects
- 3D enhancements and video capabilities are potential features, but the exact timing is unknown.
- There are currently 7–10 ideas in the works. Some ideas will succeed, while others will fail.
- Web and mobile front-ends: the goal is to load and search instantly.
- Make the image generation process as quick and smooth as possible.
- Loading speeds continue to be an issue for users with many images.
(4) Other updates
- Midjourney will invest more in infrastructure to improve performance and prevent outages.
- Overloaded databases caused the recent outage due to the volume of images generated.
- Some images from April 1–12 are missing as a result of the temporary solution implemented to alleviate database outrages. However, the developers will bring them back soon.
(5) Aesthetic and demographic differences
- There are aesthetic differences between age and gender.
- Males are associated with higher contrast and strong colors.
- Females are associated with lower contrast and pastels.
- The older aesthetic seems more weathered and grungy.
- Younger seems to be cleaner and more minimal.
- The current aesthetic is skewed toward older male preferences.
- People prefer characters who resemble their own demographics.
- The developers are thinking about ways to rebalance or allow for more aesthetic variety.
