In this article, we will have a quick overview of what has changed and how the image output quality has evolved over these versions with some sample prompts and outputs.

What’s new in v5 ?

So here’s the official version of what’s new … and later in the article, we mention our unofficial findings on what is cool ! Los geht’s !

What is new in Midjourney V5 as compared to the version 4
A quick comparison of what’s new in V5 ( Image created by Author )

Lets get into the details of each change.

  1. --tile argument

Used when you are creating a pattern. V3 had it , they had temporarily taken it out on v4 and now , they have it re-introduced in v5

Here is an example :

/imagine tesseract pattern, repeat, white and blue highlights --s 1000 --v 5 --tile

Whats new in Midjourney Version 5 ? ( — tile argument is back )
The tile argument has been brought back in version 5 .

2. aspect ratios ( --ar argument )

In V4, you could only have custom aspect ratios which are either not taller than 1:2 or not wider than 2:1. What it means is you not have a ratio like 4:1 or 1:3 . That means, cinematic wide screens were not possible to be generated in v4 !

In V5, you can have your own custom ratios with any width:length ratio ! That’s a great option to have !

YES ! you can even go 10:1 ( but why would you ?? ) Here are some examples of custom aspect ratios .

Different aspect ratios supported by midjourney
A few of the standard aspect ratios ( Image generated by Author using midjourney )

So, that means cinematic renditions of images , eg : in anamorphic frame formats ( ratios 2.39:1 ) which are used in the artistic/cinematic creations are now possible in V5. Have a look at an example —
