Intelligent User Interfaces
Enhancing User Intent Recognition with AI
Imagine this: You’re a five-year-old, standing in front of a vending machine for the first time. You’re eyeing the candy bar behind the glass, clutching your shiny quarter. However, the puzzle of navigating this unfamiliar box of magic buttons daunts you. You have your quarter, but where does it go? And how do you tell this machine which candy bar you want?
This scenario, a classic one in the world of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User-Centered Design (UCD) and User Experience (UX), underscores a key component of the ‘feedback cycle’ called the Gulf of Execution — the gap between your desire for that candy bar and the actions needed to procure it.
Why UCD and HCI?
User-Centered Design is a design philosophy and a process in which the needs, wants, and limitations of end users of a product, service or process are given extensive attention at each stage of the design process. It involves a heavy emphasis on making products accessible, understandable, and generally easy to use.
On the other hand, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) provides the basis for the feedback cycle that is integral to UCD, and allows us to understand how users interact with systems and where they encounter difficulties, enabling us to make…
