How to Increase UX Maturity in Your Organization

Almost every UX designer struggles with UX maturity inside their organization.

This week I was studying over 200 pages that I found in Harvard Library on how to overcome UX Imaturyty, and since it is long and difficult to read, instead of just recommending it, I decided to come here and summarize it for you.

We know that many businesses understand the importance of UX design, which wasn’t widely recognized 15–20 years ago.

But while more people are trained in UX design, simply having beliefs and skilled designers inside the organization isn’t always enough to achieve UX goals.

This study by Elaine, E.G. Buis, Simone, S.R. Ashby, Kristel, K.P.A. Kouwenberg, that we are going to discuss today aims to identify best practices for UX practitioners working with low UX Maturity clients to foster a user-centered mindset.

Who can bring UX Maturity to an organization?

The findings show that UX practitioners play a crucial role in overcoming organizational barriers to UX.

The problem that we have is that while many organizations seek UX professionals to optimize their products, they often struggle to allocate resources and misunderstand the UX process, especially within agile environments.

Challenges faced by UX Practitioners include, but are not limited to:

  • Late-stage UX activities (they are onboarded in the project too late)
  • Limited access to user data
  • Being seen only as a way to enhance visual appeal
  • Clients did not understand UX as part of the product strategy

Indicators of UX Maturity

  1. Timing of UX involvement in projects.
  2. Availability and integration of UX expertise.
  3. Use of user input techniques.
  4. Leadership and company culture.
  5. Integration of UX processes with other corporate processes.
  6. Application of design thinking broadly.
