1. Information Overloading
In starting month, when you will be introduced to your respective charter, you will be bombarded with a lot of information. It is natural to feel overwhelmed and stressed these days but definitely worth it because the learning curve these days will be very good. Always make notes of whatever KT sessions you are attending.
2. Revisit your charter again and again
It is very important for a product manager to be on top of his charter. In starting month, pay attention to each and every initiative, and go through the respective PRD multiple times. Read the PRD of initiatives that are planned in the coming quarter but also the initiatives which have been done in the past
We have taken close to 100+ mocks and helped students to get into their dream product roles.
3. Competitor Analysis
In the 2 months, I have learned that competitor analysis is one of the most essential things which a product manager should do on regular basis. It will help a product manager to know where the industry is moving and help prioritize the initiatives for the upcoming quarter.
4. Guesstimates or Impact Analysis
Learn to calculate the goodness of each initiative in your charter by doing some guesstimates as to how much uplifting some key metrics will take place from your initiative. Always be on top of the numbers and key metrics
5. Spend a good amount of time on your PRD
In 2 months, I have seen some of the finest PRDs but it is okay you can’t write like them from the very start. These hard-earned skills will take time but your PRD should have things like “what problem are you solving” and “why is this even a problem” (have good backing from the data) and the use-cases/ requirements should be crystal clear to the stakeholders involved.
6. Keep your stakeholders aligned
Product management is not only about writing good PRDs and getting them done but also about stakeholder management. For each of your initiatives, you should think about the dependent stakeholder and make the whole process transparent with them.
80+% of the candidates have major hick-ups in their resume, want to be in the other top 1%?
7. Be on the top of your A/B experiment
Keep a close eye on your A/B experiment, check the directionality of your experiment, and iterate quickly. While a product manager should celebrate a successful experiment but keep a kin eye on the failed experiments.
8. Product management also constitutes project management
Product management is not only about your PRD and initiatives but you also have to track them. So it is good practice that you join the sprint meetings and standups so that you are on top of where is your initiatives in terms of progress.
9. Enjoy the process and results will come
Your key metrics/OKR won’t jump instantly, have patience and enjoy the process.
