Doherty Threshold

--

In today’s technology-driven world, our interactions with devices have surpassed those with fellow humans. Whether it’s browsing a website, using a mobile application, or working with complex software, the speed and responsiveness of our interactions greatly impact our overall productivity and satisfaction. This is where the concept of the “Doherty Threshold” comes into play.

Doherty threshold states that “Productivity soars when a computer and its users interact at a pace (<400ms) that ensures that neither has to wait on the other”.

A seamless website or application that responds instantly to user commands, provides smooth transitions between screens, and offers immediate feedback is key to enhancing engagement, focus, and overall satisfaction. In contrast, encountering a blank white screen without any indication of progress or loading can be frustrating, leaving users uncertain about the cause of the issue and leading to repetitive attempts to access the content. By prioritizing fast response times and employing visual cues like skeleton loaders and animations, designers can create a user experience that minimizes frustration, keeps users in a productive flow, and maximizes their potential for a positive interaction.

The Important take-aways are:

Users don’t really like waiting a long time for any results to appear

If the reaction of interacting on something doesn’t come within the expected time, users might end up doing misclicks.

To create engaging digital experiences without making the user wait for a long time use of animations and skeleton loaders, progress bars makes the users engage visually without making them feel frustrated and disconnected.

The below screens are perfect examples as they make the user visually engage with the application. They provides a clear clue that the website is loading.

In an increasingly technology-driven world, fast and responsive interactions are vital for optimal user experiences. The Doherty Threshold emphasizes the importance of eliminating waiting times between users and computer systems. By utilizing techniques like skeleton loaders and animations, designers can create seamless interactions that enhance engagement and productivity. Examples from Facebook and Netflix demonstrate the impact of responsive design. Embracing the Doherty Threshold enables us to bridge the gap between humans and technology, unlocking a future of efficient and empowering digital experiences.
