Ever noticed how most smartphones today have rounded edges, while the older models had sharp edges?

Or how car designs have transitioned from boxy shapes to more aerodynamic and curvy designs?

But there’s one place where edgy shapes are transitioning very quickly into rounded designs — Online!

Every popular website you know has had this change. Remember how the Google search bar looked only a few years back?

The buttons and the search bar were all rectangular.

The most recent change you must have noticed was on Youtube:

You see that the thumbnails have become rounded now. Most likely, it is to optimize the look of the video on the rounded corner screens (which are everywhere).

So what is it with all this? Why is everything getting rounded?

The evolution of rounded edges in design is a fascinating story, and in this post, we’ll explore how it has shaped the way we interact with online products today and what the future may hold.

The Evolution of Rounded Edges

Let’s not go too far back in time.

Back in the day, mobile phone devices came in various shapes and sizes.

However, most smartphones were rectangles with sharp edges. They were known to cause discomfort when held for long periods.
