Case study: User flow uncovering—Disney+

No time to explain. In this series of articles I do a really quick website review, which describes three flowchart aspects like onboarding, «killer feature», and dark patterns. You can grab these ready-made user flows for free and build your own. Today, we are going to focus on Disney Plus. Without further ado let’s get into it.

#1 — Onboarding

What’s good?
The onboarding process is one of the best I have ever seen. The signup process is very easy, with no distractions or unnecessary stuff and a CTA that shows the action you are taking. I really love the password rules and a dynamic bar that only appears while typing or warns when you’re typing in an address that has already been used. To me what is missing there is an “edit” button.

What’s bad?
I didn’t really get what was the point in me adding profiles at this stage, so let’s skip this part.

#2 — Playing single video

What’s good?
The whole process feels like I’m watching a well-made movie at the cinema with good quality images and graphics. There is also a detailed subtle menu with more than W3C guidelines, which are very helpful.

What’s bad?
You have to scroll down the whole page to get the needed episode each time and in case there are more than 10 seasons — that can be really annoying. Yep, I’m not really excited about the dropdown menus, but since I have a choice I would go with the easiest way.

#3 — Saving on Disney+

What’s good?
The saving process is great on its micro. With its clear grid view you can create an endless play-list for a whole weekend, but I didn’t get when and why the icon turned into a tick. It’d be useful to have there something like an “added to watch list” highlighted or another micro-interactive bar to drop me a hint where the episode I have already seen is.

What’s bad?
You can’t clear filters while scrolling the list, so it’d be great to have an option to rearrange. There are tons of good ideas on Dribble’s playlist hashtag. Yes, I get it’s hard to create anything new while working with a reference and it can take a lot of time. But you can try.

Outro

Disney+ is a streaming service with clear ideas and minimalistic flow, but it still needs some improvement. I know it’s a big thing and design is never perfect, but it’s a great start, a stunning idea, it looks nice and is easy to use. In case you’re searching for some ideas to upgrade your streaming service I’ve got something for you. Take a look at the gaming industry. In my humble opinion it has been created by top-notch designers that implement crazy ideas and often make nonstandard solutions.
