Sometimes, you need an image quickly. The world of deadlines is relentless, and when a visual is needed, creatives rarely have the time to create a unique masterpiece. Stock images have gained popularity in the last few decades, but envision a world where the relentless quest for the perfect image is obsolete. Generative AI (GenAI) strides boldly into the creative production scene, promising to birth ideas from mere text whispers. Yet, does this technological marvel address the age-old affliction known as design fixation? Or is it merely a seductive illusion, luring us into a labyrinth of algorithmic monotony?

“Sometimes, your first idea is not your best one. But you might fixate on it, especially if the idea has worked for you before. In academic terms, this phenomenon is called design fixation. In layman’s terms, we might call it getting set in your ways, experiencing tunnel vision, regurgitating old ideas, or being blinded to alternatives.” — Shaunacy Ferro in Fast Company

A recent study by minds from MIT, Harvard, and the Toyota Research Institute attempts to tackle this puzzle. Their brainchild, DesignAID, a GenAI tool developed to transcend the limitations of traditional image searches. But as we gaze into this digital abyss, we must ask: is it innovation or merely a mirror reflecting our creative limitations?

“For each unique verbal description, DesignAID can generate an image almost instantly — often more polished and developed than a quick artist’s sketch,” claims Thomas W. Malone, MIT Sloan professor. But can the soul of art be captured by code? There is a silent scream from creative designers reacting to GenAI worldwide.
