Background

The general trend of travel continues. Even now during covid, people are looking for ways to take a short trip.Vacation in your own country is becoming popular, taking a plane less. We already have a great deal of experience with traveling with a motorhome and see the market only growing.

Opportunity

Create a process at which renting and letting the purchased camper does not become a cumbersome process.

Proposed solution

Rental website with calendar for booking a holiday with the camper.

Challenges & Constraints

  • Small team with a limited budget
  • Larger websites can offer larger deals
  • Communicate the camper’s availability

Who is the user?

Questions that were asked during the interview:

  • How do you currently travel?
  • Would you see yourself travelling with a camper and why?
  • What do you expect when travelling?
  • What are some things you don’t like while travelling or booking?
  • What kind of activities do you like doing while travelling?

Based on the people that were interviewed, the target audience was split in different groups of demographics and trip duration. This gave us an idea as to what the attitudes, motivations, needs and pains are for each group.

Demographics

Stephan & Lisa — Young couple or friends
Hilde & Geert — Older couple

Couple with children

Trip duration

Weekend warrior

Summer Holiday users

Winter Holiday users

User journey

The user journey is a storyboard that was intensively discussed with all stakeholder. UX is not only about the end-user but also about the people who will be in contact with that user (Employee Experience). A process that will be monitored constantly and modified when needed.

User flow

Cart sorting

Based on the market research I collected a few key functionalities for the website. With open cart sorting I did tests to see which items belonged together.

Lowfi prototype

I first went old school by printing out other websites with elements I needed to incorporate in the site. Then I cut and pasted them in a way that represented the website. This gave me quick and dirty look at how the page would look like.

lowfi prototyping

From that point on I went into Figma to create a prototype to test out functionalities for each page and the user flow. The first userflow needed to be revised in order to fit with the overal story and flow of the website.

Lowfi prototype

Learnings testing

  • The page with the calendar and prices gave some testers difficulties. They did not know how to reserve the camper. They were used to click on the calendar to select the data they want to travel.
  • Radiobuttons for the upsell should be replaced by + or -.
  • Expand the list of what is included in the camper.
  • When asked to cancel their order they wanted to contact us directly. This is something we want to resolve with our help center.

Branding

While I am doing tests on the lowfi prototype I also worked on the branding. Ranging from colours to logo and implementation of these elements on different products.

Revised lowfi prototype

I devided the prices and booking page into 2 screens. One is an overlay the other is another page. Test-users tried to click on the calendar to select which dates they wanted to travel. by deviding booking and the calendar their should not be any more confusion.

Second tests were positive and resolved previous confusions.

Current status: Website is live.
