Building Your First UX Portfolio

A compilation of portfolio creation tips from a UX newbie

As a UX beginner, it was hard to not jump into building a portfolio too soon. I was amped and ready to start applying for roles before I even had the bare minimum understanding of Figma.

Thankfully, I waited to build a portfolio until I had some practice with the design process. And now I can tailor my portfolio to the roles I want to apply for in the future.

But let’s not downplay it — starting my portfolio was intimidating.

If you’re trying to get your portfolio going, here are a few tips I learned to help along the way.

Do some research first

Start by researching expectations for what your portfolio should include. In general, recruiters and hiring managers use your portfolio to learn about you, your thought process, and what you learned.

Most of us won’t have actual work to showcase right away. But case studies for fictional products or designs will work! Just make sure to format your case studies in a user-friendly way.
