Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT are transforming the landscape of online reviews, generating fake reviews that are increasingly difficult to distinguish from genuine ones. These AI-generated reviews are not only grammatically perfect but also convincingly detailed, making them a potent tool for manipulating online ratings.

The Impact on Online Platforms

Online platforms like TripAdvisor and Google are facing an uphill battle against these AI-generated reviews. In 2022, TripAdvisor identified 1.3 million reviews as fake, while Google blocked or removed a staggering 115 million fake reviews. The rise of AI-generated reviews presents a new challenge for these platforms as they strive to maintain the integrity of their review systems.

The Response from Online Platforms

In response to the rise of AI-generated reviews, TripAdvisor and Google have implemented multiple levels of defense to weed out fake reviews. TripAdvisor, for instance, uses a combination of automatic screening tools and human moderators to scrutinize reviews. Similarly, Google employs a mix of human operators and advanced technology to monitor for fraudulent content 24/7.

The Legal Implications

The rise of AI-generated reviews has also caught the attention of legislators. In the UK, government-commissioned research estimated that between 11% and 15% of all reviews in certain product categories were fake, causing an estimated annual harm of £50m to £312m to UK consumers. The upcoming digital markets, competition, and consumers bill is expected to make it illegal to pay for fake reviews or to host a review without verifying its authenticity.

The Role of AI Companies

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has been questioned about its responsibility in preventing its AI tool from producing fake reviews. However, the company has yet to respond to these queries. As AI continues to evolve, the onus is on AI companies to ensure their tools are used responsibly and ethically.
