A checklist of common user problems

Early in the life of a product it’s good to have a list of common user problems to validate your solutions against.

Here is that list.

Features

  • The product doesn’t have the feature I want/need
  • I don’t know if the product has the feature I want/need
  • The features don’t match my expectations

Content

  • The product doesn’t have the content I want/need
  • I don’t know if the product has the content I want/need

Value

  • The cost of the product doesn’t align with what I wish to pay
  • The product will not be valuable to me
  • I don’t know if the product will be valuable to me

Product understanding

  • I don’t understand the product’s value proposition
  • I don’t understand the core principles of the product
  • I don’t understand the problem the product is solving
  • I don’t understand how the product solves the problem

User experience

  • The core workflow is difficult for me
  • My preferred workflow is difficult for me
  • The product doesn’t have the workflow I like to use
  • I lack the skills to use the product
  • I don’t know how I’m meant to use the product
  • The way the product works doesn’t match my expectations
  • I received poor or inadequate customer service
  • The user experience is slow or time-consuming
  • The product is slow to load, react, update etc

Sales and customer support

  • The support experience is poor
  • The sales experience is poor
  • The post-sales experience is poor
  • I don’t trust the sales experience

Perception and emotion

  • I have no confidence in the product’s user experience
  • I have no confidence in the product’s ability to serve me over time
  • I have no confidence in my privacy and security in using the product
  • I don’t like the brand of the product
  • I don’t like the communication style of the product
  • Something about the product bothers me
  • I’m not in the right headspace to use this product

Accessibility

  • The user experience is poor on my chosen device
  • The user experience is poor on my chosen screen
  • The product doesn’t cater for my physical abilities
  • The product doesn’t cater for my mental abilities
